Lady Cats Bring Home a Plaque
October 6, 2017
This has been a great year for our Lady Cats playing tennis. Even as their season was winding down, they kept playing strong. They placed second in both conference and district. The Lady Cats traveled to Farmington for the MAAA Conference Tournament to play Farmington, Potosi, Arcadia Valley, and North County. Senior Bailey Stamp and junior Maddie Burrows worked together to win second and third in their doubles. The duo also won second place for their singles matches. Taylor Starkey and Victoria Peppers, a.k.a “the gators,” took first place in their #2 doubles match with a little help from “ESPN.” Taylor went on to get second in her singles match. The #3 doubles players, Amber Collier and Elizabeth Snyder worked through the heat and won third in the #3 doubles bracket. Amber kept fighting and won second in the #5 singles division. And finally one of the newest Lady Cats, Liz Hinkle, also won second place. Overall, the team won second after the Farmington Knights.
The Lady Cats were still ready to fight when the district games and tournaments came around. Their first district match was against the Windsor Owls from Imperial, Missouri. Taylor, one of the gators, had to sit out on her doubles match. So, Liz Hinkle stepped up and played her first varsity doubles match with Victoria, which they won 8-1. Nerves were high throughout the game, and despite the slight change in the line-up, the Lady Cats beat Windsor 5-2. The next stop was Festus to play St. Pius for first place in the district. The girls worked their hardest, but lost 1-5. The Lady Cats finished their season after winning second place in Class 1 District 2. Then the Lady Cats went to Imperial, Missouri for the individual district tournament. Of the six girls who participated, four of them played doubles and the other two competed in singles. Bailey and Maddie won second overall in doubles, which lead them to the sectional tournament at Cape Notre Dame. Gators Victoria and Taylor won third and fourth place in the tournament. All the girls put in 100% to make the season memorable.
