Bittersweet Memories
October 9, 2017
This years seniors are feeling very bittersweet about their last game against Farmington. They played their last games as hard as they could but they did end up getting a loss. Taylor McMurry ended her season with over 70 kills, and 60 blocks, putting her at our most valuable player, from Coach Reutzel during the coach interview I had with her. The team was very upset when they heard that one of their seniors, Mattie Whitworth, was not able to play with us this season because she had surgery after she tore her ACL during basketball season.
I had the chance to interview all three of the girls, and they were all very sad that the season was coming to an end. Callista Francis was most upset because this will be the last time she’ll be on the court with some of the girls, unless they play basketball. All three of the seniors favorite thing about volleyball and being part of this team is the rush, and excitement you get to feel when you kill the ball and come together as a team. Taylor mentioned that the best advice during games is to encourage your teammates, work hard together, and be smart about what plays you make together. Mattie and her were the greatest dynamic duo last year, they worked very well together, but since Mattie was unable to play, Taylor had to learn to adjust to the new setter, and with that she had to take her own advice. Mattie and Callista both said very similar things, along the lines of, makes sure to shag balls, don’t worry about the drama, and play every game like it’s your last, because it’ll be over before you know it.
Even though it is very upsetting for all three of them, they were still able to think of all the good memories. Mattie’s favorite memory was when the whole team went to Kaitlyn Coffman’s house and watched scary movies and got so scared that they almost tipped the entire couch backwards! Taylor’s memory was when Marissa Hale was trying to throw the ball at Raylyn Dodd but completely missed and smoked Melissa Wulfert in the face! Callista’s was quite funny as well, her favorite memory she had was when they were at the Perryville Tournament, Brooklyn Hudson fell. They all were very questioning about this answer because they had so many fun memories that they couldn’t just pick one.
This season was one to remember with these three girls. These seniors finished their last games very strong and kept their heads up after the losses. They all put in so much effort to make this season memorable for their teams and themselves. We wish them the greatest luck throughout the rest of this school year, and their lives after graduation.
