Valentine’s Chocolate and Anime Club

Abbie White, Writer

Valentine’s Day has different traditions in the Japanese culture than in American. After planning months ahead of time, the anime club witnessed first-hand on getting a taste of Japan by making chocolates and the tradition involved in it as Comnick-Sensei gave them an insight to the tradition involved in the chocolate making.

The members started by melting the chocolate themselves to make four different types: Elvis Presley, Nut Chocolate, Bacon and Chocolate, and Seaweed and Sesame Seeds. The chocolate known as Elvis Presley is made with a mixture of peanut butter, bananas, and chocolate, of course! The Nut Chocolate is mixed with peanut butter and all different kinds of nuts. All of the chocolates are in the shape of a heart, hence for Valentine’s Day, haha.

The tradition states that the girls and women make homemade chocolates to give to their crushes. Giving the chocolates to these boys,

whether it be anonymous or not, will let the boys know that they have major heart eyes for them. Afterwards, the boys are supposed to repay the gesture to the woman or women they receive the chocolates from on a day known as White Day.

White Day is the Japanese holiday celebrated March 14th, exactly one month after Valentine’s Day. They repay the favor and make crafts and chocolates to give back to the women that gave them one. Grandmothers, mothers, aunts, cousins, friends, and acquaintances are given these gifts in return.

Why don’t you try these Japanese traditions!
