The 24th of February was the host of many things: rain, a double rainbow, and the Sweetheart Coronation and dance. Every February the FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) has the themed Sweetheart Coronation and Dance. This year’s theme was “Life is Sweet.” Beginning at six, students and family crowded into the high school gym where the normally sporty space was turned into a candy wonderland. The candidates for Sweetheart King and Queen were selected from various school clubs. They are as follows:

JROTC/Art Club

Carson Stephens and Alex Sikes

Student Council

Patrick Sikes and Danielle Campbell

FCCLA

Connor DeFrancesco and Macie Hovis

FBLA

Hunter Bellew and Jessika Matthews

FFA

Augi Hovis and Sara White

BETA

Colton Rehkop and Montana Hovis

Publications

Easton Elrod and Malayna Elrod

Drama Club

Wyatt Hurley and Blayke Maxwell

Scholar Bowl

Colton Helms and Jenna Martindale Wood

The candidates were expected to give a speech about the “sweetness” of life and the purpose of their organizations after undergoing interviews by the multiple judges. All the students did very well at their speeches, especially those who paid homage to the famous quote “Life’s like a box of chocolates” from Forrest Gump. After a little bit of a wait for the judges to decide who was going to be the official king and queen of the Sweetheart, we learned that the JROTC/Art Club kids were the 2nd Runners-Up. Scholar Bowl came in second as 1st Runners-Up. And last, but certainly not least, Wyatt Hurley and Blayke Maxwell brought home the crowns for Drama Club.

After the coronation, the dance began. Punch was served along with a cake featuring various types of candies; they also served cheeseballs, which was phenomenal. The dance began and while a lot of the songs were pop and hip-hop the dancers were given a bit of a variety with “Fishin’ in the Dark” and “Take My Breath Away” (yeah, the song from Top Gun). There was even a cultish dance to go along with “Fishin’ in the Dark” which involved sitting on the ground and patting each other’s legs . . . weird, right?

The dance ended with a bang, leaving the FCCLA students to clean up the candy land. Hopefully next year goes just as smoothly.
