(Not So) Sweet Victory
February 7, 2019
Every year, millions of people across the United States gather around their televisions to watch the Super Bowl. The event has something for everyone, even if the viewer doesn’t care about the game. The headline of these, though, is the halftime show.
This year, for Super Bowl LIII, Maroon 5 was scheduled to perform. On Twitter the band was shown in a teaser to be practicing the nostalgic classic “Sweet Victory”, as popularized by the television show of nearly all millennials’ childhoods Spongebob Squarepants. The whole internet was excited for this song to be played, as Spongebob Squarepants creator Stephen Hillenburg passed away a couple months prior.
To the dismay of the many fans Hillenburg impacted, the song never played. The iconic trumpet clip was instead used to introduce Travis Scott, performing his much overplayed smash hit “Sicko Mode”. The internet fell into chaos and anger, feeling robbed of this moment.
Almost immediately after this catastrophe, a post from the subreddit r/BikiniBottomTwitter hit the top of r/All on Reddit. The post was titled “Wait… is that it?” and contained a picture of the pitch forks salesman from season 5 episode 9: “Sing a Song of Patrick”. At the time of writing this post has gotten 153.9k upvotes.
This felt like a slap in the face to fans, and just shows how out of touch the planning committee is with the general public. We wanted a tribute to a legend, not a dead meme. *drops mic*
