On April 24th, the Ladycats soccer team played against Cape Central. The weather was good for a soccer game. The warmth of the sun warmed up the supporters and players while the breeze was a bit colder.

The first half of the game was intense. Cape Central tried hard to make a goal but the Ladycats fought harder. Neither team had scored a goal by halftime. With 25 minutes left in the second half, Lauren Hale (9) made an amazing save and avoided getting kicked in the face. The opposing team was allowed an open shot and four of the Ladycats had a creative play. Lining up several feet away from the shooter, the four girls caused the shooter to have to kick the ball over their heads to try to make it into the goal. After Aiana McLaughlin (10)  had taken the goalie position, Lauren Hale was put on the field. Lauren Hale made the first goal for the Ladycats, which was assisted by Julie Lunsford (9). Although the Ladycats were down by two points, the girls didn’t stop playing. One player from the opposing team was dribbling the ball toward the Ladycat’s goal. The girl made her shot but it was intercepted by Aiana McLaughlin’s amazing save.

I asked Coach McFadden if he had anything to say about this season and he said, “I’m extremely proud of our girls. They are a great group of young ladies who have done a tremendous job this season and continue to improve every day!” The girls have had a good season despite the current 3-9-3 record. Mcfadden reports that he knew coming into this season that it would be a rebuilding year for the program. There are a lot of young, inexperienced players however, with a young inexperienced group, there is a lot of potential for growth.

“We were excited about the fact that we had so much potential to grow, and that excitement was warranted because they have shown substantial growth from the beginning of the season to now and they just keep getting better every game. We’ve been competitive in nearly every game, especially here later in the season.  We seem to be hitting our stride as a team and it’s the perfect time for that as the district tournament is just a couple of weeks away.” – Coach McFadden

This game was an intense one for the Ladycats. Although they didn’t win, they can still look forward to their next game and learn from this one. Don’t forget to stop by and support the Ladycats soccer team!
